Why drive out of Barcelona?

Barcelona's public transport is excellent within the city, . A rental gives you flexibility to start early, stop whenever you want, and reach viewpoints and villages that buses simply don't serve.

Sitges — 35 minutes south

Sitges is one of Catalonia's most charming coastal towns. The seafront promenade, the old town around the church hill, and the beaches are all walkable from a central car park. Aim to arrive before 10:00 in summer to find parking easily. The C-32 coastal motorway is the quickest route and worth the small toll.

Montserrat — 1 hour northwest

The jagged mountain ridge of Montserrat is visible from much of Barcelona on a clear day. Drive up via the BP-1101 road for stunning views on the approach. There is a large paid car park at the monastery. The rack railway from Monistrol is a good option for the ascent if you prefer not to drive the mountain road.

Costa Brava — 1.5 hours northeast

The rocky coves and medieval villages of the Costa Brava — Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaqués — are difficult to reach by public transport but very manageable by car. The AP-7 motorway takes you to Girona quickly; from there smaller roads wind through pine forests to the coast.

Tarragona — 1 hour south

Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre, aqueduct, and old city walls are UNESCO-listed and genuinely impressive. The AP-7 runs directly from Barcelona. Parking is straightforward outside the old town, and most sites are within a short walk of each other.

Penedès wine region — 45 minutes southwest

The Penedès produces some of Spain's finest Cava and still wines. A morning spent at a winery — Codorníu and Torres both welcome visitors — pairs well with a lunch in the village of Vilafranca del Penedès. Designate a driver or use a driver service for the return trip.
