Driving in Barcelona: what every renter should know

Road rules at a glance

Spain drives on the right. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads, 50 km/h in urban areas, and 30 km/h on most residential streets in Barcelona. Seatbelts are mandatory in all seats, and handheld mobile use while driving carries an immediate fine.

The low-emission zone (ZBE)

Barcelona's Zona de Baixes Emissions (ZBE) covers most of the city within the Ronda Litoral and Ronda de Dalt ring roads. Vehicles must display a DGT environmental sticker to enter. Most rental cars qualify for at least a C-label sticker; ask your rental company to confirm before picking up.

Parking colour codes

Parking spaces in Barcelona are colour-coded:

• Blue — paid parking for residents and visitors, typically limited to 2 hours for non-residents
• Green — priority for local residents; visitors may park for a shorter time at a higher rate
• Grey / white — generally free, no time limit, but check signs carefully
• Yellow — loading and unloading only; no passenger parking

Always check the sign at the start of each zone — rules can vary block by block.

Tunnels and tolls

The AP-7 and C-32 motorways linking the airport to the city are toll roads. Most rental cars accept the Via T transponder for cashless payment; ask your provider at pick-up. Keep some cash as a backup for manual toll booths.

Parking garages

For overnight or all-day parking, a covered garage is the safest and most practical option. Rates in central Barcelona typically range from €20–35 per 24 hours. Look for Parkings signs or use apps like Parkimeter or ElParking to find and reserve a space in advance.

Tips for the first day

Allow extra time on your first trip out of the airport. Read the route before you start and avoid the most congested city-centre streets between 08:00–09:30 and 17:30–19:30. The neighbourhood ring roads (Ronda de Dalt, Ronda Litoral) are almost always faster than driving through the centre.
